In a world increasingly dominated by technology, one Madison establishment is making a profound case for investing in what truly matters: our people and our youth. UpNext TV studio anchors Tim Anderson and John Carrie recently introduced a deeply moving edition of the Business Spotlight. Host Makhi Jackson stepped inside Mentoring Positives and Muriel's Place to sit down with owner Will Green and discover how a local restaurant is shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
Turning Pain into Passion
The story behind Mentoring Positives and its accompanying restaurant, Muriel's Place, is built entirely on love, resilience, and legacy. After experiencing significant loss in his life, owner Will Green made a conscious decision to channel his grief into a powerful purpose.
The journey began with the memory of his mother, Muriel Pickens, who inspired the creation of the youth mentorship organization. More recently, Will faced another devastating heartbreak when his wife, Becky Green—whom he had known for over 30 years and been married to for 24—suddenly passed away in March 2026. Rather than stepping away, Will is deeply committed to moving forward and solidifying a beautiful community legacy in Becky's honor.
What's Cooking in the Kitchen?
Muriel's Place opened its doors as a storefront restaurant roughly three years ago, providing a lively community hub and a fully functional culinary classroom. When you look into the kitchen, you will see local youth working side-by-side with staff members like Tyrone to craft high-quality, delicious products.
The menu and retail shelves highlight incredible items entirely prepared by the kids:
"Off the Block" Salsa & Pizza: The signature flagship products that give youth hands-on experience in food production and entrepreneurship.
Chocolate Chip Sea Salt Cookies: A brand-new, crowd-pleasing dessert product brought to the table that is already a massive hit.
More Than a Restaurant: True Mentorship
While the food is phenomenal, the core mission is youth development. Will and his team utilize the kitchen environment to teach vital life skills, focusing heavily on the kids' social-emotional makeup to help them grow into great people.
The organization structure extends well past the kitchen counters:
Restaurant Operations: Youth learn accountability, teamwork, and business management during standard business hours.
After-School Gym Programming: Once school lets out, the team transitions over to the gym from 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM, keeping kids engaged, active, and fully supported in a safe environment.
"This work is really important when we work with people," Will shared during the interview. "A lot of people think technology and all those other things really matter, and they invest in those things a lot. We really should be investing in our people and our kids, because kids are the future."
